Man United‘s attempts to return to winning ways suffered a massive blow on Wednesday night, November 4, following their Champions League defeat to Istanbul Basaksehir. United came into the match off a 1-0 disappointing loss to Arsenal at the weekend in the Premier League and were looking to dust off themselves against the Turkish giants.
However, goals from former Chelsea star Demba Ba and Edin Visca rendered Anthony Martial’s a mere consolation as the Red Devils were stunned 2-1 at Faith Terim Stadium.
The homeside had the best chance to take the lead in the 11th minute after a dominant start, but Visca hammered his shot just over from 25 yards.
Demba Ba made amends for the missed goalscoring chances two minutes later, with the ex-Chelsea star capitalising o United’s defensive blunder to slip the ball past Dean Henderson for an opener.
Visca nearly doubled the advantage in the 33rd minute after a delicious cross from Bolingoli but headed straight at Henderson who had no problem calming United’s nerves.
However, the Bosnian winger made it 2-0 in the 40th minute, firing home powerfully from the edge after he was set up by Ba.
Martial went on to pull one back moments before the break, with the Frenchman heading into the far corner with nonchalant ease from Luke Shaw’s well delivered cross.
The second half of the match saw neither side find the back of the net as United were condemned to a comprehensive defeat – their first in the Champions League this season.
The result leaves the Manchester side sitting top of Group H, but in danger of dropping down depending on the outcome of the group’s other fixture pitting RB Leipzig and Paris Saint-Germain.
