My friend recently tagged me in a post on Facebook and it was talking about how we need to add “Living in Uganda” into our CVs, to tell you the truth I think I am singing-up for it! These days it’s really hectic living in Uganda, believe it or not you need to count it as an achievement. With the way new taxes are coming up lately, it might even force the Roman Caesar to resurrect just so he can also have a share of it. It’s really devastating!!
From social media taxes, SACCO taxes, KCCA taxes, Import Books taxes to TV Station taxes and so many others that are in place plus those that are yet to come. And there is no explanation as to why all these taxes are being generated! This is really insane!! Let’s say, it’s okay if only these taxes are put to their rightful use. May be the government needs to Google the use of taxes to a country, may be, …….. (Very pissed off to type this one) Our taxes are supposed to cater for the following:
Health programs: Our taxes are supposed to fund health programs like government hospitals, Maternal and infant health care and other healthy initiatives.
Military: Our taxes are also supposed to help pay for national defense and security-related programs
Social Security: Beneficiaries include retired workers, surviving children and spouses of deceased workers, and disabled workers.
Veteran benefits: Our income taxes are supposed to help cover veteran pensions, medical care, education programs and disability payments.
Food and agricultural benefits: This category includes assisting programs like NAADs
Education programs: primary and secondary education initiatives are supposed to be funded through our income taxes.
Interest on the national debt: It’s no secret that almost all governments have debts. The government relies on our taxes to make the interest payments on the borrowed funds but on reasonable interests.
If we are to critically analyze all the above, none of them seems to be really progressing, as a matter of fact most of them are withering. Then it keeps me wondering why collect all these taxes. Just a curious and infuriated Ugandan!
